Ocean Beach is ideal for families who love San Francisco and frequently enjoy beach days. Whether wrapped in the iconic fog or bathed in golden sunlight (you can see both in this post!), this location provides a breathtaking backdrop for your photos. It’s a place that feels quintessentially San Francisco—rugged, beautiful, and ever-changing.

Preparing for the Weather

One thing to keep in mind about Ocean Beach—it can get cold and windy! While I always check conditions before a session and will reschedule if it’s too windy, some breeze is part of the experience. That’s why it’s important to dress accordingly. Layer up, bring cozy sweaters, and most importantly—keep the kids bundled up. A shivering toddler is never happy in photos! And while the wind might make you reach for boots, I always recommend going barefoot for a natural, relaxed vibe (and no sandy shoes to deal with afterward!).

Is Ocean Beach Right for Your Family?

While this location is perfect for adventurous families who love the ocean, it’s not the best fit for little ones who might have a hard time staying out of the water. The currents at Ocean Beach are strong, making it unsafe for wading or swimming. We’ll stick to the shoreline for some playful splashing, but if you have a runner who won’t resist the waves, you may want to consider a different spot.
