How to Create Classic Newborn Photos
Many things may spring to mind when you think of newborn photos. You may think of raw birth photos, or perfected Anne Geddes style images of just the baby or even lifestyle images. While all of those have a place in the newborn photography world, I am partial to classic newborn photos that focus on you, your family, and your space.
When people ask me what clothes they should wear, or how they should decorate their house, or what props to bring to a newborn session, I have one piece of advice.
Keep it classic.
Remind yourself that these images will be hung on your walls for a lifetime, and may even grace the halls of your grandchildren. Staying with simple outfits in classic sillouhettes makes for timeless, classic newborn photos that can go with any home style, size or culture.
You also want to keep it true to you. For your main images, stick with neutrals so they can go in any home no matter the style, but feel free to inject some fun into the remainder of the images with toys your kids love or a second outfit change.
A focus on classic newborn photos, at least for a portion of your session, allows for you to have a cohesive set of images as your children grow and if you decide to have more children as well. If timeless photos are important to you, you’ll also want to be mindful in choosing your photographer. Some photographers have trendier, artistic edits, while some, like me, have clean, true-to-color edits that lend themselves to extremely classic newborn photos.
