Is My Baby Too Old for Newborn Photos?

For one reason or another (ahem…having a freaking baby and taking care of said baby), newborn photos may have been pushed to the back burner. By the time you realize that they didn’t happen, you may think it’s “too late” and wonder ‘is my baby too old for newborn photos?’

Well, let me be the first to tell you that there is no such thing as too late in lifestyle photography. It’s one of the glorious things about lifestyle newborn shoots. Let’s talk about the different phases of the first year, and why I consider each one to be just as worthy as the next for photography.

  • Newborns- This phase lasts around three months. Yes, a one week old baby looks different than a three month old baby, but they still aren’t mobile, can’t sit up, and more or less have the same few expressions. As long as they aren’t sitting up, my sessions at this age all pretty much function like a newborn session. For a breakdown of my thoughts on the pros/cons of each week of this phase, click here.

  • 3-6 months- During this phase, your baby will probably be able to sit up, grows into what will be their lifelong personalities and may even start solids! They have grown into some of the physical qualities they will have as they grow into full blown kids and have adorable social smiles.

  • 6-12 months- So many people focus on that one-year milestone, but anywhere in this phase is so fun to capture. They are hitting milestones left and right and whether they start walking or mumbling or pulling up on things, it’s all amazing to document.

So friends, you may think you are too late for a session with your baby and worry that your baby is too old for newborn photos, but I promise, once you are ready for photos, your baby will be just as fun in front of the camera and each stage brings new joys along with it.

If you are based in Marin or San Francisco and are feeling like you are ready to go for it and take photos with your baby in their current stage, you can book a session here.

*The baby in this in-home session was 6 months old at the time of these photos. Her mom has scheduled sessions around Christmas ever since and it’s such a wonderful tradition.
