Fun Family Photo Inspiration

If there’s one thing I want my photos to scream, it’s joy. Yes, sometimes that means huge belly laughs and big smiles, but other times it means finding the joy in our everyday.

All of my in-home family sessions have two parts. The first is the more traditional portraits of your family and all of the combinations (mom with kids, kids alone, etc). The second is incorporating everyday parts of your life for the most fun family photos at home that you could possibly hope for! These activities create visual interest, they help tell the story of your family, they evoke emotion, they highlight the things my families really do and most of all, they are fun!

If you are in San Francisco or Marin and book an in-home family photoshoot with me, we will use a collaborative process to pick the activities at your session. You’ll write what your favorite things to do as a family are in your questionnaire. From there, I'll lead you in the right direction in regards to what photographs well. On the day, we’ll see what the kids are the most interested in and how everything is flowing and we will pick from there!

One of my favorite things to choose to do, especially at the end of the session, is to make a mess. You might be dying a little at the thought of messing up your house that you cleaned just for the photoshoot, or ruining your hair and make-up, but trust me on this one. The messier the activity, the more fun the kids have. The messier the activity, the better it photographs. The messier the activity, the stronger the memories.

There are so many great messy activities that we can almost always find one that fits my families. Baking is a fan favorite and was used in this in-home shoot in Oakland. There are also water balloons, art projects, jumping under the covers and playing with all of the pillows or a food fight. Photographing messy, chaotic family fun is one of my favorite parts of my job and it’s always a great way to end a session when the kids and family worked hard to have a great photoshoot!

Since my in-home sessions are an hour long, we may not be able to get a whole baking session in, especially if your kiddos needed time to warm up, but we can build towers and knock them over, or just play in blankets as a way to end the session, too!
